Preventive and Periodontal Care

Preventive dentistry is the modern way of helping you keep a healthy mouth. It helps you to keep your teeth, and means you need to have less dental treatment. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. The better you prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you will have of keeping your teeth for life.

Since most dental conditions are painless at first, you may not be aware of dental problems until they cause significant damage. Therefore, for best results, we recommend that you schedule regular dental exams and hygiene appointments every six months; more often if you’re at higher risk for oral diseases.

Dental cleanings and screenings

A dental cleaning (prophylaxis) is recommended every six months to remove dental plaque and stains you’re unable to remove yourself, as well as to check for signs of tooth decay.

Along with preventive maintenance, make sure you look for warning signs and see your dentist immediately if you notice any of the following:

  • Bleeding gums while brushing, flossing or eating hard foods
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Any change in the fit of your partial dentures
  • Any change in bite
  • Persistent bad taste or bad breath
